Macia Social Centre - Help for Mozambique

Learning to read, write and do math, but also obtaining vocational training, is not taken for granted in Africa, especially for girls. Basic math and the ABC often become the foundations on which to build their lives. A person’s education and training frequently determines if they are going to stand a chance and, if so, what future they have, and whether they can shape and develop their life

Macia is a small city between the capital of Maputo and Beira on the Indian Ocean. The training areas in the Macia Social Centre include computer courses, typewriting, English courses, lessons in practical skills such as welding, blacksmith work, building trade, besides handicrafts and sewing, and the support of a self-learning group. The women have the most difficult time. They are still discriminated against because they are responsible for the entire house and field work. For this reason, particular attention is paid to their training and they are encouraged in particular.

Other projects include information events about HIV and Aids, especially support for HIV-infected and affected people. Another initiative is the construction of an Aids orphanage and the opening of a preschool.

The positive economic and political development in Mozambique is also having an effect on the education system. Ever more people want to obtain a school diploma. Unfortunately, the number of applicants greatly exceeds the number of available places. Besides many young men and women, there are also adults who are trying to catch up on their missing school years. It is particularly important to show initiative for the disadvantaged rural areas and to offer every pupil the opportunity to receive an education, irrespective of his or her social background.
