The Evangelical College of Theology (TECT) in Jui

Theological Education in Sierra Leone

Pastors in Africa are not only theologians, but also teachers, counsellors, spiritual and social development aid workers, as well as conflict mediators in cases of societal emergencies and problems. They are people who preach the word of God and provide comprehensive care for people in society and respect them.  They are urgently needed in Africa.

The Evangelical College of Theology (TECT) is the theological training site of the Baptist Convention of Sierra Leone (BCSL). Its goal is to give young men and women qualified training for pastoral service.

The theological seminary TECT is an inter-denominational training facility that is supported jointly by the Baptist Convention, the Wesleyan Church (WCSL), Countess of Huntingdon’s Connection (CHC) and United Brethren in Christ (UBC). In Jui, 170 pastors and congregation deacons are trained each year.

The students live with the teaching staff on the campus in Jui, outside the gates of Freetown. Besides the classroom buildings, the administration and the library, the students live in part with their families on the premises. There are always some difficulties, caused by the power and water supply. Wells and pumps must be built and, above all, expertly maintained.

A positive development is that the stock of books has continued to grow thanks to foreign aid.

It is notable that the college not only provides education for the students, but can also help amputees and injured war veterans in the neighbouring localities of Hastings, Jui and Newton. This is done in bible study classes, prayer meetings, life counselling sessions and through agricultural training.
