Medicine for South Africa: Aid for Africa

The HIV/AIDS department of the Baptist Convention of South Africa (BCSA) coordinates more than 20 projects. In the process, the focus is placed on the support of HIV/AIDS-affected people and orphans. They are helped by medical treatment, pastoral care and food packages. Often, the people live without water and power and thus in a very unhygienic environment. Due to a lack of information and poor mobility, many patients have no access to medication.

The projects are supported by countless volunteers that are continually trained when possible. A major task is the motivation of the colleagues. They are given e.g. the opportunity to exchange their experiences with other colleagues in briefings. Furthermore, it is important to promote the congregations’ involvement in the projects and also to continue doing the education work because AIDS is viewed as God’s punishment in many places.

HIV and AIDS affects more women than men in South Africa. For many, the training seminars with counsellors are the only opportunity to get information.  In some projects, they can improve their financial situation through sewing and beadwork.
