Balaka farm project

Aid to Africa: Farm project Balaka

Learning to read, write and do math, but also obtaining vocational training, is not taken for granted in Africa, especially for girls. Basic math and the ABC often become the foundations on which to build their lives. A person’s education and training frequently determines if they are going to stand a chance and, if so, what future they have, and whether they can shape and develop their life

The farm is the main project of the Baptist Convention of Malawi (BACOMA) in which young people are taught practical skills. They are trained in jobs such as farming and agriculture, chicken farming, carpentry and sewing.

Malawi is acutely affected by HIV/AIDS, and the securing of food is critical for most families to survive. Many families face tremendous challenges because orphan children are also given to them for care. To this extent, the farm project gives young people that have become destitute through no fault of their own a livelihood and opportunities.

In recent years, the workers on the farm always had a good harvest of corn and soybeans. The problem is that too much time passes between the harvest and the next planting, a period in which the farm is not used. To facilitate year-round farming, irrigation and sufficient power must be ensured (e.g. by using generators, pumps or solar panels). To date, roughly half of the 26-hectar land is being farmed. So there is enough space available to generate higher income through livestock and chicken farming.
