Djouvai agriculture and pupil project

Aid to Africa: Djouvai agriculture and pupil project

Dagaï is a small place in North Cameroon, which is affected by the challenging, climatic conditions of the Sahel zone. As part of the agricultural project “Djouwai,” the avoidance of erosion and the retention of water have been addressed in recent years and decades. Pupils are also provided an opportunity to earn money they need to attend school by planting trees. The pupils are assigned work and their names are entered in a register. Their hours of work are also recorded there. The money they earn is placed at their disposal at the end of the campaign.
83 pupils from grades 6-9 have planted 400 - 600 trees on their holidays: Neem trees, cassia trees, acacias. At the same time, fences are erected around the individual trees to protect the newly planted trees from goats. In part, stone walls are also built to hold the water back during rain. In addition to the possibility for pupils to earn their school money, the goal is to have the people learn to handle the resources of wood and water in a sustained way. This year the women in Dagai have been sensitised to see to more soya in their diet.
