Social Centre in Diadema : Aid for children in Brazil

Diadema is a city neighbouring Sao Paulo with a population of 600,000. Many people live in favelas, as the slums are called in Latin America. The drug scene has been firmly established, and hundreds of young people fall victim to drug trafficking murders.

At the age of 10 already, many children are abused to become drug mules. Their life’s goal is becoming a drug lord – for as such they would have power and money, and they would command respect.

During the day, the children are left on their own and hang around in the streets. Their parents must work to make a living and cannot take care of them.

In the „Núcleo Social de Diadema“ Social Centre, more than 200 children aged 5 – 15 are taken care of during the day. The get two meals a day, home work tutoring, Bible teaching, social care, and music lessons; all kinds of courses and sporting activities are also provided. The staff mentoring them have been trained in educational and social work, and the results achieved since 2002 have been very encouraging. The two workers in charge are Simone Almeida and Gilson da Silva.

There is a waiting list of many children who would like to get enrolled in the Social Centre. This is also our intention - to be realized as soon as the means and workers needed are available.

For several years, there has been a growing church in this favela, too.
