General practitioner - help for poor patients in India
This boy with chronic kidney failure was able to receive subsidised initial treatment.

Poverty, malnutrition and infections are the most frequent causes of many diseases in India. For the most part, people suffer from diseases that are no longer prevalent in our societies. Thus, e.g., tuberculosis with all its complications is a widespread problem as is malaria and undernourishment.

Many people do not have the necessary means to go to a doctor. For this reason, they often have to endure the diseases and illnesses in the hope of improvement. And when they come to treatment, it is often too late. Then there is also the weak infrastructure in these areas, which makes it almost impossible for the people in the villages to reach the large cities. For that reason, medical aid is important for enabling them to sustain a living.

The hospitals in Ludhiana, Vuyyuru and Pithapuram are supported by EBM INDIA through special funds to facilitate “free operations” and hospital stays for impoverished patients. Furthermore, they receive, like the hospital in Serango, financial support services to make important investments in medical devices and vehicles. Some new facilities have also been built.

The fundamental purpose of the hospitals is to ensure medical treatment, care and aid to the poor and under-privileged. The latter are supported by trained doctors and nurses, who use the medical devices and can even treat serious diseases.
